Insights from Nicky Sheridan

Acquisitions are not only about expanding market share they are about aligning people, processes, and culture to unlock long-term value. In our recent conversation about the Nedbank – iKhokha acquisition, Nicky Sheridan, Principal Growth Advisor at Xponential, emphasised that successful integrations depend on a clear vision, operational discipline, and empowering people.

“An acquisition must go beyond numbers on a balance sheet. It is about how effectively you can integrate teams, streamline processes, and deliver value to customers while creating sustainable shareholder value,” notes Sheridan.

He further highlighted that acquisitions provide a unique opportunity to modernise business processes, accelerate digital transformation, and foster resilience in increasingly competitive markets. When approached with strategic intent, they become a catalyst for innovation and sustainable growth.

With regards to the Nedbank acquisition of iKhokha, Sheridan shared the following views:

“This acquisition is a major success for South Africa, particularly for township entrepreneurs and small businesses. It’s encouraging to see a big corporate bank like Nedbank partner with a fintech that understands the informal economy. This move has the potential to propel financial inclusion and give more entrepreneurs access to digital payments — which is a big win for the sector and the country.

It’s also an important boost for the digital economy because it encourages innovation and competitiveness. Over time, this should lead to more jobs and have a positive impact on South Africa’s growth.

From my perspective, there are two key points:

The synergy is powerful, combining iKhokha’s agility with Nedbank’s financial strength is exactly what small businesses need. However, it’s important that iKhokha retains its brand identity and flexibility within Nedbank’s broader strategy. Their entrepreneurial spirit must not be stifled; instead, Nedbank should allow them to remain agile and innovative.”

The key take-away from this acquisition is that growth through the right type of partnership, at the right time can make for a meaningful opportunity and market positioning. Something other organisations could use in their own unique growth journeys.
